THE NEW CENTRAL ASIA
Downtown Luncheon with Professor Adeeb Khalid
Wednesday, October 21, 11:30 a.m. doors open, noon presentation

U.S. Bank Plaza, Fredrikson & Byron, 200 S. 6th Street, 40th Floor, Mpls

Program Host: Keith Libbey '59

Adeeb Khalid, the Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor of Asian Studies and History, will provide a historically grounded introduction to this complex region of the world that emerged in our consciousness with the collapse of the Soviet Union.  We'll go beyond the clichés of the Silk Road or the Great Game and the disinformation of Borat to seek an understanding of the region on its own terms.  We'll focus on the tumultuous history of the Soviet period that shapes to a great degree what the region is today and where it might be headed.   Prof. Khalid specializes in the history of modern Central Asia, which he first visited in 1985.  He works with sources in Uzbek, Tajik, and Russian, and is the author of two books on the region.  He has taught at Carleton since 1993.

Cost:  $10 includes lunch. To make your reservations contact the Alumni Affairs Office at 507-222-5842 or alumni-office@carleton.edu by Sunday, October 18. All reservations need to be paid in advance by credit card.
