Ways of Being Home MSPIFF

Join Carleton's Cinema and Media Studies faculty member Cecilia Cornejo for a live Q&A of her film Ways of Being Home ~ Between Northfield & Maltrata, which is being screened as part of the MSPIFF39 Redefined, a virtual alternative to the much anticipated annual theatrical event, cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis. The film will be shown, along with a fine selection of features and shorts, until May 23rd.

Ways of Being Home explores the immigrant experience from the perspective of the Mexican community living in Northfield. Most members of this immigrant community, about 70% or more, trace their roots back to Maltrata, a small agricultural municipality nestled in the mountains of the state of Veracruz. Filmed between 2016 and 2019, Ways of Being Home moves between both towns to draw attention to the geographical and emotional displacement experienced by the immigrant community as well as their resilience, ingenuity, and fierce determination. Made in close and constant collaboration with community members, Ways of Being Home offers a nuanced portrayal of the ways displaced people craft a life and a home away from home.

Access to the film can be purchased online through May 23. Please note that access to MSPIFF39 Redefined is geo-restricted to viewers in Minnesota and a MN billing address is required to purchase a ticket. The live Q&A Zoom event is free, but you must register prior to the event to participate.
