Chronic War, Displacement, and Survival:
Livelihoods among Long-term Refugees in Myanmar/Burma

Thursday, July 9, 2020
8:00 a.m.
via Zoom

  Steev Lynn '85

“A refugee agency comes to the aid of people displaced by war or natural disasters. Myanmar has both; civil wars going on since independence, and mega-storms that devastate huge swaths of the country. A refugee agency provides food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, and other necessities of life to people who have lost almost everything. … But clearly longer-term solutions are needed because aid agencies can't support people forever. We help refugees get back to farming, or start new businesses, or learn skills to get jobs.” --blog post by Steev Lynn '85

Originally from northern New England, Steev Lynn '85 began his international career in the Peace Corps. He worked for over seven years in West Africa, with additional work in Latin America and Asia. Since early 2019 he has managed a refugee livelihoods program in Myanmar (Burma) for the Norwegian Refugee Council, working closely with the Karen (pronounced k’REN) people. His wife, a doctor, works with international health organizations in the same area.

Karen refugees began arriving in Minnesota in the early 2000s, with large numbers arriving starting in 2005. Today more than 10,000 people of Karen descent live in Minnesota. St. Paul is home to the largest Karen community in the U.S.

Steev will be joining us virtually from Myanmar (it will be a post-dinner event for him!) where he will discuss his career improving economic security among the populations of developing countries, most recently in Myanmar.

Cost: None.
