Brett Smith '64, a leader of the organization Divest Carleton, will discuss the rationale for and current status of the campaign that is calling on Carleton College to divest its endowment from the 200 largest fossil fuel companies. Divest Carleton has joined others at more than 300 colleges and universities around the country in asking administrations “to take the next step toward real action on climate change.”

Divest Carleton believes that in order to combat climate change, significant national policies aimed at cutting emissions are needed. Divestment aims to change the way the public, governments, and investors view fossil fuel companies in order to create a political climate where large-scale action on climate change is feasible. Come hear more about what this campaign is all about.

Brett Smith was an economics major at Carleton and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree at Yale and a Ph.D in economics at the University of Michigan. He retired in 2006 from a teaching position in environmental studies at Macalester College. He has been working on divestment since 2013.
