Celebrate the holidays with Carleton alumni, parents, students and friends.  We will explore the allure and romance of chocolate while probing some of the history of cacao from the Mayas and Aztecs to its embrace by eighteenth-century Europeans and finally to modern America.  We will also look at where chocolate comes from, its constituents and chemistry, its health effects, and how high quality chocolate is manufactured.

Professor Mohrig taught at Carleton College for thirty-six years and is the Herman and Gertrude Mosier Stark Professor of Chemistry and the Natural Sciences, Emeritus.  He has also been an amateur historian most of his life and believes that there is nothing wrong with having fun while learning something about the chemistry and history of one of our favorite foods.  On two recent occasions, Professor Mohrig taught an eight-week course on chocolate in Northfield’s Elder Collegium.

Alumni:  Please bring a main dish or side dish to share (dessert and beverages will be provided) and memories of your Carleton experience to share with prospective Carleton students and their families.  We also need a few volunteers to assist with this event.  Please let us know if you can help when you RSVP.
