a Lecture by Professor Fred Hagstrom

Saturday, July 23, 2011
2 p.m. Lecture
Reception to follow

Japanese American Museum
369 E. First Street, LA

Please join Fred Hagstrom, Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art, for a discussion of his artist's book, Deeply Honored, a story that links Carleton to an important historical period and a remarkable family.  On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which required 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans to be imprisoned in internment camps. Carleton participated in the student relocation project, which allowed Japanese American students to leave internment camps and continue their educations.  Deeply Honored tells the story of Frank Shigemura, the first student to come to Carleton under that program, and his family.  Some of the art pieces from Deeply Honored will be on display during the reading.

The public lecture begins at 2 p.m. in the Tateuchi Democracy forum at the Japanese American Museum.  A Carleton reception with wine/punch/goodies will follow in the Democracy Lab, also at the museum.

Cost:  $8 per person for admission to the museum;  $5 per person for the reception.

RSVP to Club Co-Chair Debra Grubb ’79.  For more information, contact the Carleton Alumni Relations Office at alumni-office@carleton.edu or 800-729-2586.
