Carls of all ages and descriptions (students, alums, parents, friends, & kids) are invited to join Ann Iijima ’72, Pete Mathison ’80, George Roberts ’68, John Wallace ’69, and David Hougen-Eitzman (Sr. Lecturer, Biology) for the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival, an inexpensive and fun daytrip (or weekend) for the entire family!

We'll gather at noon for lunch (bring your own or visit one of the great food vendors on-site) at the “Gathering Place” − the large tent near the food vendors and main stage; look for maize & blue balloons. Chat with alumni musicians about bluegrass and old-time music and take a tour of the music and activity venues. You'll have the remainder of the day and evening to enjoy the festival, including concerts, workshops, showcases, kids' activities, hiking, swimming, and horseback riding (extra charge for horseback riding.)

The festival features five stages, all with shaded audience areas, and 30 hours of concerts by great national & regional bands, including the International Bluegrass Music Associations’ (IBMA) most-awarded male vocalist, Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, Grammy-nominated and IBMA’s instrumental group of the year, The Boxcars, plus Monroe Crossing, the Platte Valley Boys, the Roe Family Singers, Jack Klatt & the Catswingers, and many more. There will be 20 hours of demonstrations, workshops, old-time dances with live bands, callers, & instruction, and morning yoga. Please see the festival website for Saturday’s schedule.

The festival is held at El Rancho Mañana, a beautiful campground with a swimming beach and horseback riding. (There are shower facilities in a couple of locations and porta-potties everywhere!) It has 1208 acres of privately owned land with 25 miles of trails for hiking or riding. There's a free tractor-drawn trolley service running throughout the campgrounds.

Saturday admission: Adults: $30 at gate, Teens: $10, Kids 12 & under: Free!

(MBOTMA is offering us a special price of $18 for adults. In order to get this discount price, you must contact Ann Iijima (contact info below) by noon on Friday, August 1, with your name and telephone number. MBOTMA staff will call you to take your order.)
