Houston Food Bank Group Volunteer Event

Saturday, May 5, 2018
8:00 a.m. - noon

Houston Food Bank Warehouse
535 Portwall St
Houston, TX 77029

Volunteer support is critical to our mission of leading the fight against hunger! The Houston Food Bank utilizes volunteers six days a week at their main warehouse. Whether you come out as an individual or part of a group, we are certain you will have an enjoyable, positive experience. Come join us for a Carleton Alumni Team effort, Saturday May 5.

Description of Duties: Varies with the makeup of volunteers for each shift. Most of the projects at the warehouse involve inspection, sorting, and repackaging of donated food items for community distribution.

Cost: There is no cost to volunteer, but you may want to donate food items or money to the Food Bank.

Items to Bring: You may want to bring some spare change for drinks and snacks during break time. Lockers are provided, but please leave valuables at home.

What to Wear: Closed-toe shoes REQUIRED - smashed toes are no fun, so we strongly enforce this safety precaution. Casual dress, long pants (preferred), t-shirt with sleeves.

RSVP by May 3. Registration with the Houston Food Bank is REQUIRED prior to this event: http://houstonfoodbank.civicore.com/index.php. Additionally, please RSVP with Lisa Ryan '82. If you have volunteered at the Houston Food Bank in the past, you just need to login to register for the May 5th 8 am-noon shift. If you have not volunteered before, create a profile for yourself, then register for the May 5th 8 am-noon shift.

SPECIAL NOTES: Volunteers MUST be at least 6 years old and supervised by parent or guardian throughout the shift. All volunteers under the age of 18 also need a completed Youth Volunteer Consent Form signed by a parent or guardian. A copy of this form can be downloaded by clicking the RESOURCES tab on your Volunteer Profile page on the Food Bank website. Please plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes before your scheduled volunteer shift so you can check in, receive instructions and start on time. If you arrive after the start of your shift, you may have to wait up to 30 minutes for orientation and assignment. If members of your group arrive late, we cannot guarantee they will be able to join you in your assigned project area.

Directions:You can use Google Maps for directions. From Downtown: Take IH-10 east and exit Gellhorn St. (exit #774). Make a U-turn at Gellhorn, stay on feeder and turn right on Portwall St. If space permits it, you may park in the front parking lot, but in the event of a large volunteer turnout, you may be directed to our overflow lot located behind the building.
