The Seattle Carleton Club

invites you to

“Gauguin and Polynesia”
with Professor Lauren Soth

Saturday, March 24, 2012, 1 to 4 p.m.

Lecture:  Hillis, Clark, Martin & Peterson
1221 Second Ave., Suite 500, Seattle

Tour:  Seattle Art Museum
1300 1st Avenue, Seattle

Please join us! Lauren Soth, Professor of Art History, Emeritus, will give a lecture on Paul Gauguin then accompany the group to the Seattle Art Museum’s “Gauguin and Polynesia” exhibit. After enjoying the lecture, cross the street to the  museum, where Professor Soth’s expertise will bring even greater depth to this special exhibit.  Visit: http://seattleartmuseum.org/gauguin/

Past exhibitions have addressed Gauguin’s involvement with other cultures in a fairly superficial way. Through a balanced contextual analysis of Polynesian art alongside Gauguin’s works, this exhibition brings Polynesian arts and culture into the center of Gauguin studies. The show will display about 60 works by Gauguin (paintings, sculpture, works on paper) that fully reveal the extent of the influence of Polynesian art and culture on his work.  (From SAM website)

Professor Soth taught art history at Carleton for 40 years before retiring in 2004. Among his courses was a seminar on Gauguin, and he has published a short note on the artist. He will be accompanied in Seattle by his wife, Nancy.

A total of 30 tickets are available at $20 per person.  RSVP by March 13, 2012, to club co-chair Loren McWethy ’04.  Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Questions? Contact Michael Kirschner ’81.
