The Houson Carleton Club

proudly invites you to

“Impressionism, Non-Impressionism”
with Professor Emeritus Lauren Soth

Saturday, March 8, 2014, 11:30 am

Lunch at The Black Labrador, Churchill Room
4100 Montrose Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006

Followed by a tour of “The Age of Impressionism”
at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
5601 Main Street, Houston, TX 77005

Please join Lauren Soth, Professor of Art History, Emeritus, for a talk on late 19th century French Impressionism. He’ll discuss key characteristics of this then revolutionary, now well-loved, school of art, illustrating his points by referencing some of the pieces we will see later in the day. Lauren Soth taught art history at Carleton for 40 years (1964-2004), including courses on Impressionism. He will be accompanied by his wife, Nancy, a retired administrator of Carleton off-campus programs. We’ll start with lunch at The Black Labrador, followed by the talk. We’ll then go to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for a tour with Professor Soth through their exhibition, “The Age of Impressionism: Great French Paintings from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute.”

Luncheon will be a chicken salad (vegetarian selection is an assorted cheese plate), a mini-brownie and a beverage.

Cost: Price for the luncheon ($18.50; $17 for the cheese plate) includes tip and tax. Museum admission (Carleton group rate) is $20 for adults, $16 for seniors (65+), $14 for youths (13-18), and $8 for children (12 and under). MFAH members, please see arrangements outlined online.

After our viewing of “The Age of Impressionism,” you’re invited to stay for an optional group tour with Professor Soth of the MFAH’s Beck Collection, Houston’s own collection of Impressionists (included in ticket price).  Then, you’re invited to join us at the Museum’s Café Express, where coffee, wine, and other afternoon refreshments will be available for purchase.
