An Evening with Carleton Art Professor Fred Hagstrom

Please join Carleton Professor of Art Fred Hagstrom, for a discussion of his artist's book, Deeply Honored, a story that links Carleton to an important historical period and a remarkable family. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which required 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans to be imprisoned in internment camps. Carleton participated in the student relocation project, which allowed Japanese American students to leave internment camps and continue their educations. Deeply Honored tells the story of Frank Shigemura, the first student to come to Carleton under that program, and his family. Some of the art pieces from Deeply Honored will be on display during the reading.
Fred Hagstrom is the Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art at Carleton. He joined the faculty in 1984. His artwork often deals with social issues, and he works primarily in printmaking and book arts. His work is included in museum collections that include the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center. His artist’s books are in many College and University collections, including Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and the University of Delaware.
