A Talk with Professor Ken Abrams

Saturday, March 23, 2019
2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Eugene Public Library
100 West 10th Ave
Eugene, OR 97401

In this age of rapid scientific advancement, why do so many individuals believe the MMR vaccine promotes autism? Or visit astrologers to learn about themselves and their futures? What leads folks when ill to pursue homeopathy, magnet therapy, or faith healings? How do people come to believe they can communicate through extrasensory channels or have been abducted by aliens? More generally, how can one soundly evaluate claims to knowledge?

In this talk, Associate Professor of Psychology Ken Abrams will explore common characteristics of pseudoscientific phenomena in modern times and consider the cognitive underpinnings of pseudoscientific beliefs. This will be an open discussion and guests will be encouraged to reflect on their own belief systems and maintain a healthy degree of skepticism toward controversial claims.

Ken Abrams teaches courses in health psychology, psychopathology, and statistics, and a seminar on science and pseudoscience in psychology. He also leads every other fall the Carleton Cross-Cultural Psychology in Prague off-campus studies program.
