David Wright '86, who was a running back for the Knights while studying French Literature at Carleton College, and co-author, Luc Bouchard, will be in Minneapolis to promote their new young adult novel, Away Running, at the following events:

  •   Official launch at Addendum Bookstore (478 S Cleveland Ave, St Paul, MN) on Saturday, April 9th at 5 pm.
  •   Conversations on Race series at the St. Paul Public Library (Highland Park Community Center 1978 Ford Pkwy, Saint Paul, MN) on Monday, April 11th at 6 pm.

Away Running tells the story of Matt, a white quarterback, who flies from Montreal to Paris (without his parents’ permission) to play American football in a rough, low-income suburb called Villeneuve-La-Grande. Freeman, a black football player from San Antonio, is in Paris on a school trip when he joins Matt’s team. Racial tension erupts into riots when some of their Muslim teammates get in trouble with the police, and Matt and Free have to decide whether to get involved and face the very real risk of arrest and violence.

At this moment when police brutality towards black boys and young men is front-and-center in the news in the US, there is a need for this book. Away Running deals with difficult subjects, including poverty, class divisions, and racism, in an authentic, engaging, and topical way.
