New York Carleton Club invites you to a

Lower East Side Immigrant History and Food Walking Tour with Ray McGaughey '11

Ready for Jewish baked goods, Kosher pickles, locally-roasted coffee and Depression-era candy? And how about a tour of a restored 19th century synagogue that will take your breath away? If so, this tour must be for you! Join licensed New York City tour guide Ray McGaughey '11 as we nosh our way through the Lower East Side, the one-time notorious slum that is rapidly gentrifying.

Where: Please meet at the southern tip of Sara D. Roosevelt Park: Canal St. between St. Forsyth and Christie St.

Cost: $20 per person, includes food and tour. Purchase your ticket online by September 12. Only 15 spots are available, and we expect tickets to go quickly. UPDATE: The tour has been sold out.

This tour will focus on the effects of the largest immigrant group to pass through the neighborhood, the Eastern European Jews of the late 19th century and t! he early 20th century. We will see and taste a unique blend of the Old and the New. Mid-19th century tenements and brand new luxury condos that share the same block. Mom-and-pop shops juxtaposed with chic restaurants and boutiques. We will even tour the last matzo factory on Manhattan, still producing matzo on the Lower East Side for over 75 years. Nowhere in New York is there such a rich cultural heritage and such a dynamic future. Check out the website for photos and more details on this tour:
