The U.S. territories are some of the most overlooked parts of the country, all but forgotten in the national discourse. But Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa have all played a pivotal role in American history, and continue to be an important part of the national story. Travel writer Doug Mack ’03 put his American Studies degree to work and traveled more than 30,000 miles to see all the territories for his book, The Not-Quite States of America, (named one of the Top Ten Travel Books of 2017 by Smithsonian). Join Doug for a presentation and conversation about the territories and their history, culture, and everyday life, including wild tales of guano mining, why Guam has the best barbecue in the USA, and the many ways territory residents are denied the full rights of American citizenship.

Doug is a freelance writer whose stories have been published in The New York Times, Slate, Newsday, Travel + Leisure, National Geographic Traveler, and elsewhere. His first book was Europe on Five Wrong Turns a Day.

No RSVP necessary to attend! And save the date for the April Breakfast Club on April 11th.
