Ranked Choice Voting in Minnesota – Its Progress and Prospects

Ranked Choice Voting (also known as Instant Runoff Voting), a balloting system that ensures majority winners of elections in which voters rank their preferences among candidates, has been used in countries around the world for decades, and more recently for municipal elections in several U.S. cities – including Minneapolis and St. Paul, and prospectively soon in Duluth, Red Wing and Bloomington.

Bill has been an active volunteer over the past several years in a grassroots citizen’s initiative advancing this election reform method in our state, and has arranged to co-present a brief on RCV’s rationale and process with Jeanne Massey, Executive Director of Fair Vote Minnesota, the movement’s sponsoring non-profit educational and lobbying organization.

On the cusp of a vitally important presidential election, plan to join other Carls to imagine together what could be the implications of this initiative for future state and federal elections (which Bill and Jeanne will illustrate by having attendees participate in a fun and educational ‘mock election’ for a preferred breakfast menu selection!)

For background information on October’s topic, recipients are invited to visit the FairVote organization’s extensive website at http://fairvotemn.org
