"Debutante at 64: Finding Post-Retirement Passion and Purpose."
Thursday, January 9, 7:30 a.m.
Perkins Restaurant, 4201 W. 78th Street, Bloomington, MN

Charlie Quimby's novel, Monument Road, has received wide praise from the book industry as a debut novel and has been selected as an Indie Next pick, marking it as one of the leading fall offerings in independent bookstores across the country. Charlie will talk about the sources of the novel and what prompted him to take on the challenge of writing fiction after retirement. He'll be joined by spouse Susan Cushman '72, a retired Ob/Gyn, who writes a blog, See You After Work, profiling people who have found new purpose in life after leaving their careers. She'll share her own perspective on how mingling two retirements can be like juggling two careers.

“A taciturn, ornery man grieving the loss of his wife plans to release her ashes off a spectacular cliff which she loved, and fling himself off after her. Various interruptions ensue, however, and while driving he revisits decisions, beliefs, and relationships, all with some regrets and some surprises. This novel is remarkable for the layers of meaning inherent in the stories that evolve. Fear, risk, religion, connection, and the landscape all resonate in ways both beautiful and dangerous. [Monument Road marks] the debut of an author with a deft touch and the ability to create a story that is rich and lasting.”

Charlie will sign books brought to the event, and copies will be available on the day for $18.25.
