Gamble House Tour

August 14, 2010

The Gamble House in Pasadena is the most complete original example of the work of the Greene brothers.  The house was built in 1909, and it revolutionized architecture in Southern California.  It has wide terraces and open sleeping porches for indoor-outdoor living.  Wood is celebrated with exposed structural timbers, paneling, and built-in cabinetry.  Everything in the house is custom designed in the spirit of the arts and crafts movement.  In 1978 the house was designated a National Historic Landmark.   It is currently owned by the USC School of Architecture.

Our tour will be supplemented by comments from Lauren Soth, retired Carleton art history professor.  Dr. Soth retired in 2004 after 40 years teaching at Carleton.  During that period he taught 40 different courses, including ones on modern architecture.  He will discuss the relationship of the Gamble house to the Arts & Crafts movement by contrasting it with a contemporary work, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie house in Chicago.  He will be accompanied by his wife Nancy.

We will meet on the outside porch at 9:45 for an introduction by Lauren Soth.  At 10:30, we will have a private docent led tour of the house before it is open to the public.  To protect the floors, we must wear broad, flat-heeled shoes.  Slippers will be provided to any person with heels less than 2" wide.  After the tour Lauren will be available for further discussion.  We can tour the grounds and visit the bookstore which opens at 11:30.  This will be followed by an optional no host restaurant lunch in Pasadena with the Soths.

The Gamble House is located at 4 Westmoreland Place in Pasadena.  Westmoreland is a private road that runs parallel to the 300 block of North Orange Grove.  It is near the intersection of the 134 and 210 freeways.  Street parking is available on Westmoreland Place.

The cost of the tour is $14.00.  All registrations must be received by August 2 when the final payment is due.  The registration cost goes toward the upkeep of the house.
