Dr. Julie Risser '87, director of the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas, will provide a break from Minnesota weather with an introduction to Asmat artists who live in a remote rainforest region in southwestern Papua, Indonesia. Material to be covered will include traditional shields, wuramon or soulships, and drums as well as contemporary narrative sculpture. Risser, clinical faculty in the art history department at St. Thomas, has traveled to the Asmat region in 2009, 2010, and 2011. She has attended two annual Asmat cultural festivals and purchased pieces for the AMAA@UST collection.
