About the Event

Join Dr. Laurel Bradley, curator of the Carleton art collection, on Saturday, March 10, at the Huntington Library's exhibit: "Constable's Great Landscapes: The Six-Foot Paintings." Our program starts at 10 AM with a talk by Dr. Bradley, followed by small group tours of the gallery with Dr. Bradley. We'll meet for lunch in the Huntington Cafe at noon. After lunch, everyone is invited to stay to tour the gardens or the other galleries.

The cost for the day is $25 per person plus your lunch, with a price of $20 for students.

John Constable (1776-1837) is celebrated as one of the geniuses of English painting. Paintings of his native Stour Valley, paragons of naturalism, are imbued with the artist's own deep attachment to place and bespeak a particularly English love of landscape. This talk will introduce Constable's achievement in a variety of art historical contexts including 19th-century naturalism, landscape as autobiography, academic vs. avant-garde, and the artistic dialogue between English and French art. The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens is the third venue for "Constable's Great Landscapes: The Six-Foot Paintings."

Laurel Bradley has been Director of Exhibitions and Curator of the College Art Collection at Carleton since September 1997. Although she focuses primarily on contemporary art in her life as a curator, her scholarly expertise is in the field of 19th-century British art. Dr. Bradley, when not planning for a museum at the forthcoming Carleton Center for the Arts, enjoys engaging with alums far and wide.

The Huntington Library is located in San Marino. From Colorado Blvd or California Blvd, take Allen Avenue south to the entrance gate. Park in the main parking lot and walk to the Entrance Pavilion. There will be a Carleton check-in table open from 10 to 10:15 where you will obtain a guest pass good for the day in the museum and gardens. The program will begin in the Overseer's Room at 10:15 with a slide presentation. After the presentation, we will go to the Boone Gallery for the exhibit. We will tour the Constable Exhibit with Dr. Bradley in small groups, but there are many other galleries and gardens to visit while waiting for a turn in the Constable Exhibit.

Lunch will be a no-host lunch with a variety of salads, sandwiches, and a hot selection. We'll hope for good weather, since most of the seating is outside on a lovely patio. After lunch, you are welcome to visit galleries on your own, or you may take a garden walk with Margie and Bob Templeton '63/'63.
