Los Angeles River Tour

Saturday, May 12, 2007

(See directions below)

We have a hidden 52 mile river in our midst. It does not have as much water as the Cannon River, but it has been an important river in Los Angeles' history. Leaders are now recognizing the Los Angeles River as an asset, and some areas are being restored to a more natural state. The Los Angeles Carleton Club has arranged a private tour with Jenny Price. Jenny is a writer and environmental historian who works to make people aware of "nature" in the cities where people live, not just in wild areas. She is the author of "Thirteen Ways of Seeing Nature in LA".

We will meet at 10 AM at the River Center north of downtown to check in and form car pools. There are exhibits on the current river and on plans for reviving it. We will then drive to Glendale Narrows where the river has had a natural bottom since the concrete channel was installed. This is a more natural area with wildlife. It is also the only section of the River that has historically flowed all year, so this is the area where Los Angeles was originally settled. We'll have time to visit 2 or 3 other points along the river as it heads into downtown. This area is heavily industrial, but there are plans for improvement. About 1:00 we'll have lunch at the San Antonio Winery which was founded on the banks of the River in 1917. This is currently the only producing winery in Los Angeles and is still in its original location which is now a Cultural Historical Landmark.

The cost of the day is $15/per person excluding lunch. To make your reservations, or if you have questions, contact Margie Templeton ’63 by May 1. The day of the event ONLY, Margie can be reached by cell phone.
