Twin Cities White Pine Festival

Twin Cities White Pine Arts Festival

Thursday, June 21st, 2007
4:30 pm / Twin Cities

The White Pine Festival is a new summer arts festival that will bring nationally known artists and performers to the St. Croix Valley for interdisciplinary collaboration. The festival will encourage the vitality, humor, and candor one finds in conversations among close friends - the very sorts of conversations alumni remember from Carleton. This summer’s festival (June 20-23) will focus on classical music and poetry. Festival events include concerts, lectures, a poetry slam, writing workshops, history walking tours, and more. For a full listing of festival events and activities, visit www.whitepinefestival.org.

Several Carleton alumni are involved with the festival and have organized a special private event for Carleton alumni and friends.

On the festival’s second night, Thursday, June 21, Layton "Skip" James from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra will perform Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations on harpsichord, a rare opportunity to hear the variations on the instrument for which they were composed. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at the historic Ascension Episcopal Church in Stillwater. James will also present a free lecture on the concert’s music at 4:30 p.m.

Between the lecture and concert, St. Croix Valley area alumni invite you to join them at 6:15 p.m. for lively dinner conversation at Savories European Bistro in downtown Stillwater. A special menu will feature four entrees, including a vegetarian option, for $16 to $23.

In addition to Skip James, the festival will feature the Grammy-nominated St. Petersburg String Quartet, bestselling poet Tony Hoagland, and national champion slam poet Roger Bonair-Agard. Biographies for these and other festival artists can be found on the festival website.

Please RSVP to attend this special Carleton gathering. Call the White Pine Festival at (651) 439-6777 or e-mail carleton@whitepinefestival.org.
