LOS ANGELES CARLETON CLUB

GREYSTONE MANSION TOUR

February 20, 2010

The 55 room Greystone Mansion was built in 1926 for Ned Doheny, son of the man who made a fortune in oil.  The house was occupied by the Doheny family until 1955 when parts of the property were sold for a housing development and the mansion was sold as a movie rental location.  It deteriorated and was almost torn down in 1965.  It was saved when the City of Beverly Hills bought the property.  The city leased the house to the American Film Institute in return for the AFI paying for repairs to the house.  In 1976 the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places.   It has been featured in many movies and is used many times a year for movies, TV shows, and commercials.

Our group will have a private tour of the formal gardens, the courtyard, and the mansion.  Meet in the courtyard at 10 a.m.  The tour will take 1.5 to 2 hours.  It will involve uneven walking in the gardens and stairs in the house.  There is no elevator in the house.  If you have trouble with walking, you can tour just the courtyard and downstairs.  After the tour, those who would like to go out to lunch can adjourn to a local restaurant.

If you want to read about the Greystone Mansion, Dark Side of Fortune by Margaret Leslie Davis, is a book about the Doheny's and the building of the mansion.  You can also reference www.beverlyhills.org/attractions/greystone.

The Greystone Mansion is located at 905 Loma Vista Drive in Beverly Hills.  This is north of Sunset and west of N Doheny Drive.  There is free parking.

The tour is offered by the Beverly Hills Park Dept.  The cost is $15.
