More than 3 billion people globally cook using solid biomass fuel. Having an open fire in a kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour, leading to tremendous health and environmental impacts. As a result, more than 4 million people (mostly women and children) die every year as a result of cooking-related pollution. In Ethiopia, 60,000 die and another 5 million suffer from respiratory diseases. At the same time, the use of solid biomass as a fuel source has led to serious deforestation, soil degradation, and air and water pollution.

Join Deborah Gross, Carleton Professor of Chemistry and Tsegaye Nega, Carleton Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, for their presentation on recent efforts to introduce cleaner cookstoves and fuel pellets made from waste biomass to residents of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to address these interlinked problems.

C.O.W.S. (Conversations on the Wonders of Science) is a monthly science café in Northfield. The goal of C.O.W.S is to engage with the public to increase scientific literacy and spread excitement about new scientific discoveries. Imminent Brewing is partnering with us to host this event. Imminent will open and taps will be flowing at 6:00 p.m., with our presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. C.O.W.S. has reserved the entire brewery for our event so we won’t be competing with conversations. In other words, the sound should be great!

C.O.W.S. is organized by Rika Anderson '06, Sarah Meerts, and Laura Listenberger. Everyone is welcome. Come join us to eat, drink, and talk about the wonders of science! You can also check out the C.O.W.S. website and the Facebook page.

Cost: Purchase your own drinks and/or food. The Hideaway delivers to C.O.W.S at Imminent at 6:00 p.m. for orders placed by 5:30 p.m.! Order using the Cloosiv app and use code ZE-KW9Y for 50% off your first order or call the Hideaway at (507) 664-0400.

No RSVPs needed.
