LA Conservancy Walking Tour of Historic LA

February 7, 2009

Carleton will have a private history tour of central Los Angeles on February 7 from 10 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m.  The cost is $10 excluding lunch.  If you are a member of the LA Conservancy, the cost is $5.

The Historic Core tour provides an overview of the historical and cultural landmarks of downtown Los Angeles.  Covering a wide range of architectural styles, and including anecdotes about the people behind the buildings, this tour is a great way to become acquainted (or re-acquainted) with the unique character of downtown L.A.  Some of the most beloved Los Angeles landmarks are in this area, such as the Central Library, Angels Flight, and the Bradbury Building.  The history of the area goes back to the founding of the city in 1781, and its architecture tells the story of the growth of the city from the 1890s to the present, including the current trend of conversions of vintage office buildings into loft-style apartments and condos.

Our tour guide will be Nancy Arnheim who is a third generation native of Los Angeles.  She has led LA Conservancy tours of downtown Los Angeles for 17 years.  Her grandfather built the fountains that were in Pershing Square, so she has many personal memories to share.  Before retiring, she was a counselor at Trade Tech College, a psychologist, and a teacher.  We will spend 2 to 2 1/2 hours walking the area around the Pershing Square.  The distance is about 1.5 miles.  The tour will go rain or shine, and we will be outside much of the time.  We will then have lunch at an informal restaurant in the area of the produce market.

Meet at Pershing Square in the southwest corner by the pond between 9:45 and 10 AM.  Pershing Square is between Hill and Olive, 5th and 6th.  From the 110 freeway, exit 6th street.  There is underground parking for $3.50 with validation.  There is also a Pershing Square Metro stop on the red line.  There will be other LA Conservancy tour groups meeting in the center of the square, so be sure that you find the private Carleton tour.
