Shadow of War by James Slocum

Thursday, June 10, 2010, 7 p.m.

Czech Center

321 E. 73rd Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues), New York

Jim will do a short reading from his novel Shadow of War, sign copies, and have a question and answer session.

James Slocum, a Carleton alum, was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  After going to film school at the University of Southern California, he wrote and directed two feature films:  An American Summer starring Brian Austin Green, Michael Landes, and Joanna Kerns; and The Last Place on Earth starring Tisha Campbell Martin, Dana Ashbrook, Billy Dee Williams, and Phyllis Diller.  He has also directed numerous prime-time dramas for Fox TV including Fashion House starring Bo Derek and Morgan Fairchild and American Heiress starring Theresa Russell and John Aprea.  He lives in Los Angeles, CA.  Shadow of War is his first novel.

In the spring of 1939, Daniel Kippelstein, a 14-year-old Jewish boy is forced to flee Prague with his older sister, Anna, after the Nazis murder their father.  Traumatized, painfully unsure of himself, and distrustful of others, Daniel must confront his Catholic boarding school rival, the handsome, charismatic Josef Czerny, who has a secret dark past.

As the three young fugitives try to escape their homeland, they encounter a number of colorful characters, some helpful, some not.  There's Olma, the chatty beautician; Josef's older brother, Tomas, and his gorgeous girlfriend Ivana; a nervous small-town doctor; Jan, a stone-faced bartender; and the elegant countess Maria Von Hapsburg, whose aristocratic world is collapsing around her.

Together Daniel, Anna, and Josef embark on an unforgettable journey to freedom that is marked with danger, humor, heartbreak, and a wealthy countess whose well-intentioned escape plan goes disastrously wrong.
