The San Diego Carleton Club

invites you to a guided tour of the NOAA ship McArthur II

Sunday, August 1, 2010, 1:00 p.m.

Tenth Avenue Terminal

802 Terminal Street, San Diego, CA 92101

Marine biologist Tim Gerrodette ’68 and the ships’ officers will lead us on a fun and informative tour of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship McArthur II ( The McArthur II is named for William Pope McArthur, a nineteenth century U.S. naval officer and pioneer hydrographer of the West Coast of North America. The ship conducts oceanographic research and assessments throughout the eastern Pacific, including the West Coast of the United States, Central America, and South America, and is involved in studies in several of the U.S. National Marine Sanctuaries. The scientists who carry out research aboard the McArthur II come from many divisions of NOAA, as well as other federal and state government agencies, and academia.

Tim completed graduate studies at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and works professionally as a marine biologist for NOAA, the agency of the Department of Commerce that maps the oceans and conserves their living resources.

This is a family-friendly event, and may be particularly educational for children.

Directions:  From I-5 South, take exit 14B toward Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. At the end of the off ramp, turn left onto Logan Avenue. Take the first right onto Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. Drive several blocks. After you cross Harbor Drive, Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. will curve to the right and become Crosby Road. You will immediately curve to the left, and then will see a security gate and station.  Immediately before the security gate there is a small parking lot on the right side of the street. Look for the maize and blue Carleton balloons.  We will assemble here no later than 1:00 p.m., get security clearance at the gate, then drive into the Tenth Avenue Terminal together and park near the ship.  We must move as a group after passing through security, so please be on time.

There will be a few hundred yards of walking involved, including climbing stairs on the ship. Closed-toes shoes are required, and rubber soles are recommended for potentially slippery decks.  There will be some unavoidable time in the sun, so please bring water and wear sunscreen.

The tour is free of charge, but as it occurs within a secure facility, a complete list of names of all who will be attending must be provided in advance. Everyone participating in the tour should bring a driver’s license or similar form of identification. Children too young to have an ID are exempt.

Please RSVP by Friday, July 16 to Chris Larson ’89 with the names of everyone in your party, and please include telephone contact information for the day of the event in case there are changes to our schedule.
