Second Thursday Breakfast with Beth Virnig ’87

Thursday, October 14, 7:30-8:30 a.m

Curran's Restaurant, 42nd and Nicollet Ave South, Minneapolis

Program Coordinator:  Dolores Pospesel '55

Beth Virnig ’87 is professor and director of the University of Minnesota's Program in Public Health Administration and Policy. She was quoted in a Star Tribune article this spring on a new end-of-life planning document, Provider Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment, that is slowly being adopted at hospitals, nursing homes and hospices across the state to give terminally ill patients more control over how and where they die. Virnig surveyed 4,074 doctors about advanced care planning with terminally ill patients; her study, published in the journal Cancer, found that half would wait until all curative treatments had failed before discussing end-of-life care. Virnig will discuss the new document and other end-of-life planning issues.

Treat yourself to a tasty and inexpensive breakfast.  Reservations are not necessary.  Suggestions for speakers are always welcome.  Contact Becky Zrimsek '89 (rzrimsek@carleton.edu) in the Alumni Relations Office with your ideas.
