Join Carleton's Deborah Appleman, the Hollis L. Caldwell Professor of Educational Studies, for a talk titled "Words No Bars Can Hold: Teaching and Learning with the Incarcerated" at 2:15 pm. Professor Appleman will share her experiences teaching creative writing and other college courses at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater, a high-security men's prison. Professor Appleman has taught there regularly since 2007 and will share the creative work of her incarcerated students as well as her own reflections about that work and about the importance of educational and creative opportunities for the incarcerated. She has recently written a book about this topic: "Words No Bars Can Hold: Literacy Learning in Prison", WW Norton, June 2019.

Class of 2023 Welcome!

Following Professor Appleman's talk, there will be a Question and Answer Panel for entering students, prospective students, and their parents. The panel will be composed of recent Carleton alumni and current students and will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. Entering students from the Class of 2023 are especially welcome as this will be a terrific opportunity to meet fellow classmates and other current Carleton students.

Cost: None.
