Perennial Grains 1    Perennial Grains 2

Scientists have recently developed a perennial grain - trade named Kernza. A perennial grain could give farmers a crop to replace corn and soybeans. Unlike those annual crops, a perennial grain would better protect the soil from wind and water erosion year-round. But before farmers can plant this new crop, there needs to be a market for it. Hear how the Cannon River Watershed Partnership and other groups are working with local businesses to use Kernza to make bread and beer. You will have the opportunity to taste local beers made from Kernza, and also hear from university researchers about the environmental and economic benefits of growing perennial grains.

C.O.W.S. (Conversations on the Wonders of Science) is a monthly science café in Northfield. The goal of C.O.W.S is to engage with the public to increase scientific literacy and spread excitement about new scientific discoveries. C.O.W.S. is organized by Rika Anderson '06, Sarah Meerts, and Laura Listenberger. Everyone is welcome. Come join us to eat, drink, and talk about the wonders of science! You can also check out the C.O.W.S. website and the Facebook page.
