Cross Country and Track & Field

Hendren, a four-year letterwinner in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, holds the rare distinction of serving as team captain in three sports. He graduated as the Carleton record-holder in the indoor half-mile and mile run and the outdoor mile run. He won the Minnesota state cross country meet as a freshman and helped set new Carleton Relays records in the sprint relay, two-mile relay and a new mile record. Hendren served as president of the ‘C’ Club his senior year, helping athletics become more visible on the Carleton campus. He continued to be a leader in the running world after his graduation from Carleton, founding and coaching a youth track club through his ministry in Ventura, Calif., serving more than 200 kids per year from ages six to 13. He continued to run competitively, recording a 4:55 mile time at age 47 and a 20:31 five-kilometer time in his 60s before hip replacement surgery forced him into retirement in 1999. He and his wife, Heather, reside in Ventura. He has two children, Jean (Hendren) Ceddia ’83, and Allen Hendren, plus three stepchildren.
