Robert Bradley Leslie, Jr. was born September 13, 1930, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended Breck Military Academy in Minneapolis; Bay Village High School in Cleveland, OH (1948); Carleton College was also his father's alma mater. He played offensive tackle and end through high school and college. Bob was strongly attracted to history, poetry, and literature, as well as all things Mozart, Beethoven and Hayden. He spent many summers at his grandparents' home in White Bear Lake, MN, where his grandfather impressed upon him a strong love of nature and a desire to learn.
At Carleton he met Margaret (Gretel) Gronbach (1954); they married upon her graduation. By then he was in the midst of fulfilling his military obligation as a Navy fighter pilot. His squadron was involved in qualifying some of the earliest jets for aircraft carrier operations. In 1957 they moved to Seattle, where he pursued a law degree at the University of Washington, and continued flying as a naval reservist. He began his legal career working for King County, and in 1960 was hired by a boutique law firm founded by Willard Hatch. Practicing law there for 30 years, he then sold his practice and consulted independently through the nineties.
Bob is remembered for his tenacity, intellect, and kindness to those who knew him well. He is preceded in death by his son, Lt. Francis R. Leslie II; and survived and greatly loved by his two sons, Kevin Leslie of Chicago, and Alexander Leslie of Seattle; and three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
