Join Assistant Professor of Biology Rika Anderson '06 for an up-close tour of deep-sea hydrothermal vents—where life on earth may have originated—and her research on the evolution of the microbes that form the foundation of these fascinatingly beautiful underwater ecosystems.

About the Speaker

Environmental microbiologist Rika Anderson '06 has taught at Carleton since 2016.  In connection with her research on microbial evolution, she recently received NASA funding for a five-year project to improve how scientists recognize whether other planets in or beyond our solar system can support life.  She is the co-author of 15 scientific articles and a researcher at the Virtual Planetary Laboratory at the University of Washington.
