Join the Multicultural Alumni Network (MCAN) in welcoming Alumni in Residence guests Laura Danielson ’77 (Attorney at Frederickson & Byron) and Ben Casper Sanchez ’90 (Executive Director, Center for New Americans, U of MN Law School). Through a series of programming, they will share their experiences and insights on applying to and navigating law school, their passion for immigration law, and the complexities of being an immigration lawyer in today’s political landscape. Over their 2-day residency, join MCAN for our keynote dinner, 30 Minutes opportunities through the Career Center, and for several meals and informal gatherings to learn how to launch yourself beyond Carleton!

Laura Danielson ’77 * Alumni Profile * LinkedIn Profile
Laura works with companies, investors and other professionals in non-immigrant and immigrant visa matters with special concentration on arts, business, and investor-based immigration. She also has expertise in family immigration, asylum and naturalization matters. Laura is co-chair of the Immigration Group at Fredrikson & Byron. She has been an immigration lawyer since 1989, is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, and has taught immigration law at the University of Minnesota Law School. She is also co-author of Immigration Law in a Nutshell and co-editor of Green Card Stories, a coffee table style book which was released on January 30, 2012. As a long-term member of the Alliance of Business Immigration Lawyers, a premier group of 20 U.S. and 18 global immigration lawyers, Laura has been especially active in developing its global consortium of immigration practitioners in countries throughout the world. She was recently elected ABIL’s president. Laura is committed to developing and providing global and investment-related immigration services, particularly for foreign investors.
Ben Casper Sanchez ’90 * Alumni Profile * Faculty Profile
Ben is a clinical professor and Faculty Director of the James H. Binger Center for New Americans and teaches the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic, which engages students in strategic impact litigation on behalf of immigrants and refugees. He has more than 16 years of experience litigating cases before immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, U.S. District Courts, U.S. Courts of Appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Before joining the Law School, Professor Casper Sanchez was in private practice. From 2008 to 2013, he was also Director of the Pro Bono Litigation Project at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. He has previously served as an adjunct clinical professor of immigration law at the University of Minnesota, William Mitchell College of Law, and the University of St. Thomas School of Law. From 1997 to 2001, he was an attorney for the nonprofit immigration law office Centro Legal, where he focused on deportation defense. He graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1997.
Since 2011, Professor Casper Sanchez has served on the amicus curiae committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. He writes and lectures on immigration law topics for both local and national audiences.

2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sign up on the Tunnel for a half-hour conversation with Ben or Laura through the Careers Center’s 30 Minutes program. Learn more about their careers and how Carleton prepared them for law school and work as immigration attorneys
4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Laura will give a reading from her book “Green Card Stories” in the Library Athenaeum. Refreshments will be provided.
6:30 – 8:00 p.m. “Becoming a Lawyer that Makes a Difference.” Join Ben and Laura in the Alumni Guest House (AGH) for a dinner and moderated conversation on careers in law and issues of immigration. Dinner provided for the first 50 registrants, please notify lkeita@carleton.edu
