Gear Shifts
Gear Shifts presents both photographic and performance works from 2010 to 2018. In his visual art, 2Fik assumes multiple roles — artistic director, photographer, performer — as he stages pieces that play with reality. In his performances, he uses public spaces to question our definitions of existence, rights, and ownership. Regardless of format, 2Fik challenges viewers to explore the societal influences that compel all of us to continuously change our “gear” and shift our personalities.
About the artist
2Fik is a multidisciplinary artist who confronts assumptions around identity and gender. He returns to Carleton as an Artist-In-Residence through the Mellon Public Works Program. During his residency 2Fik will engage a number of communities: students at Carleton, St. Olaf, and Macalester Colleges; students attending Northfield's schools; and the public at large through library and art center events. Carleton is committed to using creativity as a teaching tool. 2Fik's residency celebrates the integration of art into the college's multifaceted pedagogical approach for discussing identity.
Born in Paris to a Moroccan Muslim family, 2Fik moved to Montreal in 2003 and reveled in the city’s multicultural environment, which inspired him to examine issues of identity and its socio-political ramifications. Using, photography, video and performance, he points out the ways we are programmed to judge one another quickly based on looks, gender, ethnicity and specific characteristics that bias how we view “Other.”
