NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s soccer team was unable to capitalize on its scoring chances and fell to Gustavus Adolphus College, 2-0, in the MIAC opener for both squads.

Despite outshooting Gustavus 11-to-10 and having seven shots on goal compared to four for its opponent, the Knights (4-1-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) saw their four-match win streak halted. Hannah Sturtz scored the game-winning goal for the Gusties (3-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) in the 61st minute, and Chase Miller added an insurance goal in the 68th minute.

Carleton started off the game generating all the chances. Led by Ruby Kazemi (Jr./Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) and Nora Mertz (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston), the Knights took the first five shots of the game but were unable to sneak one past the Gustavus keeper. Gustavus had no better luck, as Anna Roethler (Fy./St Louis Park, Minn./St Louis Park) saved the only shot she faced in the opening half.

Despite continued efforts by the Knights, there was no breakthrough goal, and midway through the second half, Gustavus notched the first goal of the game, and then six minutes later added on the insurance goal.

Kazemi led Carleton with four shots, and Roethler provided two saves for the Knights.

Carleton will travel to face Hamline University on Saturday, September 16 at Pat Paterson Field.
