FRIDAY'S RECAP

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Lucas Mueller (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) won both the 1000-meter and 3000-meter races on the final day of competition at the MIAC Indoor Championships, helping the Carleton College men’s track and field team climb into second place in the team standings. That is the Knights' best finish at the conference indoor meet in 22 years.

Carleton entered the day in third place, and the Knights turned in 10 all-conference performances on Saturday.

St. Thomas won the 11-team competition for the 34th consecutive year, this time totaling 168 points. Carleton was next at 123 points followed by Bethel (98), Hamline (81), and Saint John’s (71).

St. Thomas won only three events over the three-day meet, compared to five for the Knights. This is the sixth time that the Knights have been runners-up at the conference indoor meet, but the first time Carleton has done so since 1996.

Dwight Alexander (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./Lawrenceville (NJ)) got the scoring started for Carleton with his first attempt of the day in the long jump. He measured 6.61 meters in what ended up as his best mark of the competition, good enough for third place and All-MIAC status. Peter Keel (So./Roseville, Minn./Roseville) posted a personal-best leap of 6.57 meters and placed fourth to take home all-conference honorable mention for the second time on the weekend.

Carleton’s entry in the 4x200-meter relay placed fourth with a time of 1:30.72, earning the quartet of Maurice Hicks (Sr./Upper Marlboro, Md./Maret), Austin Baxter (So./Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar), Bryan Richter (So./Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln), and Ben Schwartz (So./Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) all-conference honorable mention.

Lucas Mueller (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) won the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:29.73. This marked the fourth consecutive year that a Knight finished first in this event.

Ben Schwartz (So./Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention after finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a new indoor personal-best time of 22.80. Bryan Richter (So./Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln) added to Carleton’s point total by placing seventh overall at 22.95.

Mueller pulled off an impressive double as he returned to the track less than hour later and notched his second victory of the day, winning the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:35.65, which was good for a nearly nine-second margin of victory. Teammates Matthew Wilkinson (Fy./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and Tris Dodge (Jr./Oakland, Calif./College Prep) completed the Carleton sweep of the podium as they crossed the line with personal-best times of 8:44.21 and 8:44.48, respectively. Cameron Meikle (So./Hamilton, Mont./Hamilton) added all-conference honorable mention as he placed fifth in the event at 8:46.64.

The three-day competition concluded with the 4x400-meter relay and Hicks, Baxter, Richter, and Schwartz earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention with a fourth-place result at 3:27.93.

Carleton’s showing may have been even more impressive had three of its top performers during the regular season—five time All-American Donson Cook-Gallardo (Sr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), his brother Joey Cook-Gallardo (So./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), and newcomer Zach Kulstad (Fy./Savage Minn./Prior Lake)—not been limited by illness and injury to only one combined entry… Donson Cook-Gallardo’s victory in the mile run. All three were prominent figures on relays during the regular season as well.

Select Knights may elect to participate at the Last Chance NCAA Qualifier next Friday, March 2 in hopes of improving their chances at qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held on March 9-10 in Birmingham, Ala.
