Knights total 11 top-three finishes at UST Relays

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College swimming and diving teams opened the regular season at the UST Relays, with the Knights turning in a total of 11 top-three finishes between the two programs.

For the men, Andrew Chang (So./Vancouver, Wash./Union), Ryan Wetzel (Jr./Salem, Ore./West Salem), Sam Darwish (Jr./Akron, Ohio./University School), and Stevie Fitch (So./Redmond, Wash./Nikola Tesla Stem School) were victorious in the 300-yard butterfly relay by posting a time of 2:41.96.

Chang, Wetzel, Jack Heinzel (So./Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), and Will Altaweel (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) were the runners-up in the 400-yard 4x100 IM relay, combining on a time of 3:49.92. Fitch, Tristan Belzer (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton), and Allen Yuan (Fy./Cary, N.C./Raleigh Charter) placed third in the 1100-yard animal relay, touching the wall at 12:15.26.

The Carleton women had eight top-3 results, including Kapani Kirkland's (Fy./Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) victory in the 3-meter diving competition. She posted a winning score of 204.70 on six optional dives and added a third-place result on the 1-meter board with a score of 198.05.

With a time of 3:06.57, Eveline Dowling (Sr./Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West), Yuki Nagaoka (Fy./Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley), Marcella Manivel (So./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi), and Meredith Bergman (Sr./Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Day) were the runners-up in the 300-yard butterfly relay. Caroline Mather (Sr./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista), Claire Neid (Fy./Denver, Colo./George Washington), Alison Cameron (Fy./Reno, Nev./Reno), and Anna Gergely (Sr./Denver, Colo./Jewish Day School) finished third in the same event with a time of 3:07.21.

In the 300-yard breaststroke relay, Hannah Aylward (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./Home School), Lydia Boyum (Fy./Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), Kate Grossman (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), and Ada Meyer (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) grabbed third place with a time of 3:33.83.

The 300-yard backstroke relay saw Natalie Lafferty (Fy./Aurora, Ill./Matea Valley), Boyum, Nagaoka, and Kyle Fraser-Mines (So./Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsborough) combine on a time of 3:11.81, which was good for third place. In the 400-yard 4x100 IM relay, Mather, Grossman, Gergely, and Meyer placed third at 4:30.01. Lastly, the 1100-yard animal relay saw Bergman, Cameron, and Madi Smith (Fy./Denver, Colo./DSST) cover the distance in 13:24.71, earning them a third-place result.

Carleton will compete next weekend at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic.
