EAU CLAIRE, Wis. –  Behind a career night for sophomore Anna Hughes (Glenview, Ill./New Trier), the Carleton College women’s basketball team raced out to a 14-0 lead, but the Knights could not hold the advantage and dropped a non-conference battle at UW-Eau Claire, 75-54.

Hughes finished the game with seven 3-pointers, one off the Carleton team record set by Bethany Koehler at St. Olaf on Feb. 16, 2002. Hughes totaled 22 points in this one, smashing her previous career best.

Propelled by the sharpshooting of Hughes, the Knights (3-7) roared out of the gates, scoring 14 unanswered points to begin the first quarter. She drained a pair of triples to open the game’s scoring and converted four 3-pointers in the frame. Carleton led UW-Eau Claire (6-2) by a 26-13 margin after the opening period, with Hughes’ totaling 13 points to match the Blugolds’ total.

In the second quarter, Hughes picked up right where she left off in the first period, nailing two more threes as the Knights led by as much as 16 at 31-15 with 8:40 left to play before intermission.

Not to be deterred, UW-Eau Claire mounted a comeback, outscoring the Knights by a 24-7 margin heading and headed into the halftime with a slim 39-38 advantage. Hughes had 19 points before the break.

In the third quarter, the Blugolds continued to stifle Carleton’s offense. Despite a seventh 3-pointer from Hughes, Carleton managed just six points in the period, and found itself trailing 56-44 with one quarter left.

UW-Eau Claire kept up its torrid pace in the fourth, reeling off seven consecutive points to kick things off. Carleton traded buckets for a bit in the period, but the gap was too wide to overcome, and the Blugolds prevailed by a 75-54 tally.

Hughes led Carleton with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. She pulled down five rebounds as well. Cece Leone (Sr./Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) was all over the stat sheet, compiling 12 points, seven boards, and three assists. Rookie Annabella Jensen (Salt Lake City, Utah/Hillcrest) chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.

Hallee Hoeppner poured in 31 points and corralled 10 boards for the Blugolds, who also received double-digit scoring outputs from Brooke Harris (14 points) and Ellie Clayton (11 points).

The Knights close 2018 with a home game against Bethel University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
