NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s track and field team concluded the regular season at the Tostrud Classic on Saturday. Ben Schwartz (Jr./Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) won the 200-meter dash, besting the 32-runner field with his time of 22.87.

The marquee event of the day was the 1000-meter run. It featured seven of the top eight finishers at the 2018 MIAC indoor championships plus a handful of other strong contenders. This one proved it was worth the price of admission as the top four finishers on this day were separated by only 0.44 seconds.

Lucas Mueller (So./St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy), the defending conference champion, took the race out hard and led until the last 12 meters but crossed the line fourth. Carl Kozlowski of St. Thomas (2:28.95) held off Matt Wilkinson (So./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka), who was racing the event for the first time and used a blazing finish to take second at 2:29.15. Karl Wachter of UST was third at 2:29.23, and Mueller clocked a time of 2:29.39.

Hamline’s Frank Gustafson entered the day with the top time in the MIAC. He bettered that mark by nearly two seconds and still finished seventh at this meet, one spot ahead of Joey Cook-Gallardo (Jr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), who notched a lifetime best of 2:34.29.

Other top-five results for Carleton:
Zach Kulstad (So./Savage Minn./Prior Lake) and Bryan Richter (Jr./Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-yard dash at 23.08 and 23.12.
• Ben Santos (Fy./Boulder, Colo./Boulder) took fourth in the mile run with a personal-best time of 4:28.03.
• Keenan Ronayne (Sr./Faribault, Minn./Faribault) was the runner up in the 5000-meter run with his new PR of 15:57.13. Alex Schneider (Sr./Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) placed third at 16:24.24, and Ben Schnieders (So./Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) grabbed fifth place at 16:48.82.
• Kulstad also was fourth in the high jump with his season-best clearance of 1.88 meters.
• Owen Schuster (Fy./Batavia, Ill./Batavia) claimed fifth place in the pole vault after soaring 3.99 meters.

The Knights took fourth place in the 11 team competition and will now turn their full attention to the MIAC Indoor Championships to be contested Feb. 21-23 at St. Olaf.
