HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 39-ranked Carleton College men’s tennis team notched a 7-2 victory over DePauw University as the Knights concluded their time in the Palmetto State with a perfect 5-0 Spring Break record. The result snapped the Tigers’ six-match win streak and  was the 13th straight for the Knights, who are now 15-1 on the year and 15-0 versus NCAA Division III opponents.

Jordon O'Kelly (Sr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Leo Vithoontien (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) wasted little time giving Carleton the early lead. The No. 19 doubles pairing in the country cruised to an 8-1 victory.

“Jordan and Leo’s performance in doubles was amazing,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel,”as was their heartfelt rendition of the Oscar-winning song ‘Shallow’ during the last changeover.”

Xander Zuczek (So./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) and Aaron Goodman (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) also proved victorious in doubles. The No. 7 tandem in the region improved its record to 13-3 on the year after posting the 8-5 triumph.

In singles, Vithoontien, Zuczek, O’Kelly, and Xander Roti (Fy./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) all prevailed in straight sets. Roti improved his record to a team-best 14-1 on the year.

Goodman continued his flair for the dramatic, winning a third-set super tiebreaker for the second consecutive day. This time the score was 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) as he notched his 10th win of the season.

“Trying to beat Aaron in a third set super breaker is about as difficult as properly folding a fitted sheet,” noted Zweifel.

Carleton will take a scenic drive through the historic South as the team heads to Tennessee for a March 29 match at Sewanee.
