CLERMONT, Fla. – The Carleton College softball team split its two games on Tuesday, dropping the early game 5-2 to University of Chicago before bouncing back with a 9-0 (5 inn.) shutout of the College of New Rochelle.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Knights (11-3) drew first blood via center fielder Anna Lauko’s (Sr./Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) RBI single in the bottom of the first. Carleton held that slim 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Maroons (2-3) pushed across three runs before Lauko threw out another Chicago runner at the plate to end the inning.

The Knights’ next run came in the fifth inning when Mo McConnell (Jr./Merion Sta, Pa./Lower Merion) and Maris Daleo (So./Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) pulled off a double steal, the latter taking second while the former swiped home.

Chicago found insurance by adding two unearned runs in the top of the sixth and clung to the 5-2 lead as Carleton brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh.

Daleo finished 3-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. The Knights collected seven hits, but only one went for extra bases.

Sam Kile (Sr./Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes Oaks) was saddled with the loss, permitting five runs (three earned0 on eight hits over 7.0 frames.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Knights put the game away in the top of the first inning, pushing across nine runs. It was Carleton’s biggest single-inning scoring outburst since plating 11 in the third frame of a Feb. 25, 2017 triumph over Bethany Lutheran.

That proved to be plenty of offensive support for Maddie Sherwood (Sr./Tinley Park, Ill./Victor Andrew) and reliever Logan Robinson (Fy./Alexandria, Va./National Cathedral School) who combined on a 1-hitter. Sherwood improved to 2-1 on the season after fanning four over 3.0 innings, while Robinson retired all six batters she faced in closing out the victory.

Daleo was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, while Madison Collins (Fy./Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) also went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS
Carleton plays only one game on Wednesday, March 27 as the Knights square off against Colby College at 4:15 p.m. EDT.
