WAVERLY, Iowa – When wacky spring weather forced the cancellation of the Knights’ originally scheduled tournament, the No. 1-ranked Carleton College women’s golf team changed its travel plans and headed south to tee it up at the Wartburg Spring Invite. The team adapted to the change in the itinerary quite nicely and raced out to a 20-stroke lead after the first round.

“With the high temp topping out at 41 degrees and an unrelenting 31-degree wind chill, the ladies had such a tough battle,” said Carleton head coach Molly Erickson. “All I can ask on days like today is for everyone to stay patient and not give up during the round, which is never a hard ask from this team.”

The Knights carded a 322 in the opening round, and all six Carleton players in attendance can be found inside the top 12. That includes first-round leader Ziyi Wang (Sr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy), who fired a five-over par 77 on Saturday.

Alexis Chan (So./Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) is playing as an individual this week and is tied with teammate Abby Euyang (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) and two others for third place at 81, four strokes off the pace.

Alyssa Akiyama (Jr./Terrace Park, Ohio/Seven Hills School) and Ayumi Sakamoto (Sr./Honolulu, Hawaii/ʻIolani School) are tied for seventh place at 82, while Kristin Miyagi (Fy./Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) totaled 85 strokes and is part of a three-way tie for 12th.

“I'm really proud of the way we stuck with it during a long and very cold round,” said Erickson. “With the exception of Ziyi, who was impressively steady throughout the day, everyone improved significantly between their front and back nines. That demonstrates this team's grit in spades. We're excited for round two and hoping for a warmer morning.”

Sunday’s final round from Prairie Links Golf Course is set for a 9 a.m.
