NORTHFIELD, Minn. – With a 5-2 semifinal victory over visiting University of St. Thomas, the Carleton College women’s tennis team advanced to the finals of the MIAC Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and eighth time in the last nine years.

The Knights (17-2) gained a 2-1 advantage during doubles. The No. 3 pairing of Sonya Romanenko (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Elizabeth Yim (So./Orange, Calif./Villa Park) quickly registered an 8-1 decision, but the Tommies (12-5) got a point back with an 8-5 victory at second doubles.

Carleton’s nationally-ranked tandem of Kristina Conrad (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Madeline Prins (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) shook off a slow start and claimed an 8-6 win atop the doubles lineup.

Jeanny Zhang (Fy./Guangzhou, China/Dwight School) and Faith Yim (So./Orange, Calif./Villa Park) shook off a doubles defeat with two quick singles triumphs that brought Carleton to the cusp of the team triumph. Zhang breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles, while Faith Yim added a 6-1, 6-3 result at the sixth slot.

St. Thomas notched its other team point with a win at fifth doubles, but Prins closed out her fourth singles match 6-2, 6-0 to punch the Knights’ ticket to the finals. Since the competition was played only to decision, the two remaining singles matches were left unfinished.

Carleton is the top seed in the six-team tournament and hosts third-seed Bethel University in the finals on Sunday. The competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., weather permitting, on the Pat Lamb Courts. Both squads are nationally ranked, with Carleton sitting No. 27 and the Royals coming in at No. 38. Bethel has never won the MIAC Playoffs, while the Knights will be looking to do so for the first time since 2014.
