NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 27-ranked Carleton College women’s tennis team returns to the NCAA Championships on Friday, May 10 and faces Edgewood College at 1:00 p.m. in an opening round match at the regional hosted by UW-Whitewater. This is the seventh time that the Knights have secured a spot in the national tournament, and their first trip to the NCAA Championships since 2014.

Carleton (18-2) clinched its spot in the national tournament by winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs last Sunday. The Knights captured their fifth MIAC regular-season title over the last eight years (also 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017) by going 10-0 in league play. That gave Carleton the top seed in the conference tournament where the Knights dispatched regionally-ranked University of St. Thomas in the semifinals, 5-2, and defeated No. 38-ranked Bethel University by the same score in the finals.

Carleton had four players earn a total of six All-MIAC Awards, with Kristina Conrad (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Madeline Prins (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) garnering recognition in both singles and doubles. Meanwhile, first-years Sonya Romanenko (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Jeanny Zhang (Fy./Guangzhou, China/Dwight School) took home recognition for their work atop the Carleton lineup for singles.

Edgewood (21-7) set a new team record for victories in a season and punched its ticket to the NCAA Championships via the automatic bid from the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Like Carleton, the Eagles went undefeated in conference action, then defeated MSOE and Concordia Wisconsin in the NACC Tournament.

The teams have two common opponents from during the 2019 regular season:
Luther College — Carleton won 9-0 \\ Edgewood lost 5-4
UW-Whitewater — Carleton won 7-2 and 6-3 \\ Edgewood lost 9-0

The winner of Friday’s match will advance to Saturday’s second round for a 10:00 a.m. match against the winner of the No. 36-ranked UW-Whitewater (12-11) vs. St. Scholastica (17-6) first-round contest. Saturday’s victor advances to face either Lake Forest College (21-3), Luther (15-9) or No. 12-ranked University of Chicago (14-5) in the regional finals on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
