ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s track and field team took part in a pair of competitions on Saturday. The Knights sent their distance medley relay to compete at the 103rd running of the Drake Relays, while the rest of the squad took part in the Drake Alternative meet held under less than ideal weather conditions at Gustavus Adolphus. Robert Wakeley (Sr./Kenmore, Wash./Northwest) turned in the top performance of that competition, placing second in the javelin.

On the blue oval inside Drake Stadium, Noah Laack-Veeder (Fy./Madison, Wis./LaFollette), Colby Seyferth (Fy./Banks, Ore./Banks), Arnaud Kpachavi (Fy./San Gregorio, Calif./Woodside Priory School), and Marcus Huderle (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) combined on a finishing time of 10:14.52 and placed 11th out of 21 entries. This quartet was one of three entries in the event comprised at least three-fourths by collegiate rookies. The others were Central College (fifth place) and D-II Minnesota State-Mankato (20th).

Meanwhile at Gustavus, Wakeley took over the lead on his last throw (45.97 meters), only to be beaten by a Gustavus thrower on the Gusties’ final throw.

Racing in cold, damp conditions, Garo Anguiano-Sainz (Fy./Chico, Calif./Chico) ran into the wind and won his heat of the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.34, good for fifth. Jordan Butler (Jr./El Mirage, Ariz./Dysart) was the lone Knight to run a season-best in the event, reaching the line at 23.95.

Arafat Akinlabi (Fy./Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) and Phil Juda (Sr./Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) were third and fourth in the 400-meter dash. Akinlabi posted a season-best time of 52.44

Josh Campbell (Jr./Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Brian Spisiak (Jr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) posted personal records in the 800-meter run. Campbell crossed the line at 2:00.95, while Spisiak sliced nearly two seconds off his mark to finish at 2:01.37.

Connor Jackson (Fy./Milford, N.H./Milford) had an outstanding 1,500-meter race and was the second D-III finisher at 4:15.36.

The Knights next compete on Tuesday, May 1 when rival St. Olaf College visits for the Rolex Classic at 4:30 p.m. The busy week continues with the MIAC Decathlon on Thursday and Friday, followed by the Carleton Interscholastic high-school meet on Saturday, May 5.
