Regional & National Leaders

Carleton is a player on the national stage, competing against the best teams and individuals at the NCAA Division III level. Our teams regularly seek out top non-conference competition on a regional and national level, and recently many of our teams have been nationally ranked.

  • Carleton finished 49th in the Directors’ Cup race in 2004-05, which the best overall athletics’ program at each NCAA level. The Knights finished 54th in 2005-06.
  • In the past 10 seasons, 77 student-athletes have earned All-America honors.
  • In the last five seasons alone, the men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s golf, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s swimming, men’s swimming, men's tennis, and women’s tennis teams have all appeared in their respective national rankings. In addition, the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and men’s basketball, in addition to the above teams, have been regionally ranked.
  • The baseball team made a NCAA Championships appearance in 1992.
  • The men’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, marking the program’s first national tournament appearance in 95 seasons. Jake Phillips '07 was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week and broke Carleton and MIAC records his senior season.
  • The women’s basketball team made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2001-04 and were nationally ranked each of those four seasons. Megan Vig ’06 was a three-time All-American and two-time finalist for the Jostens Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top Division III player. Hannah Oken-Berg '09 was was selected to the D3Hoops.com All-Region third team her sophomore season.
  • The men’s cross country team won Carleton’s lone team national title in 1982 and finished eighth at the 2004 NCAA Championships. The program has the most NCAA Championships appearances of any Carleton program at 14. Dan Bucy ’05 and Steve Harris ’06 both earned All-American honors during their senior seasons.
  • The women’s cross country team has made five straight NCAA Championships appearances, finishing in the top 20 each time. They’ve been nationally ranked during the majority of that stretch.
  • Carleton’s football team advanced to the NCAA Playoffs in 1992 and has had six All-Americans since 2000, including Matt Frank '09.
  • Wally Ulrich ’47 won Carleton’s only national title in men’s golf when he won the individual national championships against Division I competition.
  • Kassie Wells of the women's golf team finished 34th at the 2007 NCAA Championships. She is the first Carleton golfer of either gender to reach the tournament since 1976.
  • The men’s soccer team has been regionally ranked three different seasons under current head coach Bob Carlson. Additionally, David Watson '06 (2005) and Paul Pedtke '09 (2006) have recently earned all-region honors.
  • The women’s soccer team was regionally ranked at the end of the 2006 season. Sophie Wood '09 (2006) was Carleton's most recent all-region honoree.
  • Since 1995, the men’s swimming and diving team has featured 10 All-Americans, including Ted Marschall ’09, who has earned three All-America honors in his first two seasons.
  • The women’s swimming and diving team has finished inside the NCAA Championships top 10 three times in the last six seasons. In 2005, they won two relay national titles and Marie Marsman ’05 finished her college career with individual national titles. This past season freshman Kate Alexander '10 earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.
  • The men’s tennis team made the program’s second NCAA Championships appearance in 2004. The Knights have been regionally ranked each of the last five seasons, and the team ended the 2006-07 season ranked 31st nationally among Division III.
  • The women’s tennis team returned to the NCAA Championships for the third time in 2005. Sarah Russell ’06 also qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships that season. The Knights have been regionally ranked on a consistent basis over the last five seasons as well.
  • The men’s track and field team has produced three All-Americans since 2003: Matt Hooley '03, Dan Bucy '05 and Steve Harris '06.
  • The women’s track and field team has featured two individual national champions under head coach Donna Ricks and six student-athletes in the last eight seasons have earned a total of nine All-America citations, including a trio of All-Americans in 2003. Kelsey Barale '07 finished 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
  • The volleyball team was nationally-ranked for a school-record 26 consecutive times, ranging from the 2004 season to 2006. The Knights ended the 2005 season ranked eighth in Division III, marking the first time the program has ranked in the nation’s top 10. They advanced to the 2005 NCAA Championships and won a national tournament game for the first time in program history.
