NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Last week, Hayden Tsutsui (Northridge, Calif./Chatsworth) had a fantastic seven days at the plate and in the field, a stretch that resulted in the sophomore being selected as the catcher on the D3baseball.com national Team-of-the-Week for April 14-20.
Tsutsui batted .500 as he hit safely in all seven games, going 13-for-26. He collected four multi-hit games, scoring nine runs scored and driving in seven others. His week included with four doubles and a pair of home runs for an .885 slugging percentage. He also walked four times and was hit by a pitch, giving him a .581 on-base percentage for the week.
The catcher-outfielder homered in both ends of last Thursday’s twin bill at Saint Mary’s as he belted a go-ahead three-run homer in game one, then smacked a two-run shot in game two, accounting for the winning run. Last Saturday Tsutsui had the game-tying RBI in game two versus Saint John’s and then scored the winning run in what became a 3-1 victory for the Knights.
During his time behind the plate, Tsutsui cut down 2-of-3 runners attempting to steal.
The Team-of-the-Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. Tsutsui Is the first Knights to pick up this weekly award in 2014 after three members of the squad were recognized in 2013.
