NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team earned its second consecutive Team Academic Excellence Award from the America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Knights were one of only 29 NCAA Division III programs to take home this accolade in both 2015-16 and 2016-17 and are one of only three programs from the MIAC to ever receive the honor.

To qualify for this award, teams must have posted a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2016-17 academic year. The Knights easily surpassed that benchmark, registering a combined 3.42 grade point average.

Carleton, listed at No. 7 in the latest U.S. News College Rankings, is the highest-rated national liberal arts college to land multiple times on the list of ABCA award recipients.

As of July 18, a total of 129 NCAA teams earned the Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2016-17 academic year. That total represents less than 14 percent of all NCAA schools that sponsor baseball and includes 36 Division I programs, 34 D-II teams, and 59 Division III programs.

Last month, five Knights—Jack Atterberry ’17, Luke Curtis ’17, Logan Crowl ’18, Ben Frerichs ’18, and Brendon Fischel ’19—received MIAC Academic All-Conference honors (min. 3.50 GPA) for the 2017 season.
