NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team earned its third consecutive Team Academic Excellence Award from the America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The Knights are one of only 23 NCAA Division III programs to take home this accolade each of the last three seasons. Additionally, Carleton is one of only three programs from the MIAC to ever receive the honor.

To qualify for the ABCA Team Academic Award, squads must post a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2017-18 academic year. The Knights easily surpassed that benchmark, registering a combined 3.33 grade point average.

Carleton, listed at No. 8 in the latest U.S. News College Rankings, is the highest-rated national liberal arts college to earn the ABCA academic award all three years.

As of August 13, a total of 165 NCAA teams earned the Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2017-18 academic year. That total represents less than 18 percent of all NCAA schools that sponsor baseball and includes 50 Division I programs, 36 D-II teams, and 79 Division III programs.

Last month, six Knights—Wilson Battle ’20 (Salt Lake City, Utah); Logan Crowl ’18 (Chicago, Ill.); Brendon Fischel ’19 (Jr., Eureka, Calif.); Ben Frerichs ’18 (Sr., Alexandria, Va.); Keenan Moore ’20 (Minneapolis, Minn.); Owen Riley ’20 (New York, N.Y.)—received MIAC Academic All-Conference honors (min. 3.50 GPA) for the 2018 season.
